League of Legends Mid-Season Streamathon

Published on: 21/05/2020

Riot has recently announced a first of its kind, an upcoming League of Legends Mid-Season Streamathon. The live stream intends to celebrate the League of Legends community amongst these tough times, and especially act as a fundraiser for much needed COVID-19 relief. There is quite a decent amount of variety, featuring more than 48 hours of scheduled programming and events, ranging from continental EU team battles, influencer battles, and the much-anticipated LCK vs LEC.

When is LoL MSI Streamathon?

In a press release, Riot has revealed the League of Legends Mid-Season Streamathon will be a multiday continuous broadcast held between the 30th of May to the 1st of June.

Mid Season Streamathon schedule

Why the hype?

Given the cancellation of the 2020 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), this Mid-Season Streamathon acts somewhat as a substitute. Riot remains dedicated to give fans some competitive and entertaining content and alleviated some of our boredom at home. Better yet, the Mid-Season Streamathon will raise donations for areas like the COVID Response Fund and the GlobalGiving Coronavirus Relief Fund, who support frontline workers along with the awareness and prevention efforts against COVID-19.

Where can I catch it?

Fans will be able to watch the League of Legends Mid-Season Streamathon on both Twitch and Youtube from the official Riot channel. VODs of the event will be available on watch.lolesports.com from May 31st.

Note, given the global nature of the Streamathon, with dedicated time slots to specific leagues / region, the broadcasting language of each event will be region-specific as seen above

Things you can’t miss!

There will be two major clashes between the LPL and LCK, the current top region, and the former powerhouse that dominated the League of Legends scene for many consecutive years. This League of Legends Mid-Season Streamathon will be a first look into the strength of Korea in the international stage following their disastrous two years at worlds. While SKT may look strong this year, especially with Faker at the helm of a team filled with young talent, we never know until they truly compete with teams across the other regions. The LPL & LCK Mid-Season Cup Semifinals will take place on the 30th of May between 13:00 – 22:00 GMT +8, with the Finals being scheduled between 17:00 – 22:00 GMT +8.

The EU face-off will also be held across two separate days, with the earlier half held across 6 hours starting from the 30th of May at 22:00, across till 4:00 the next day. The finals will be held early Monday morning on the 1st of June for 4 hours across 1:00 – 5:00. EU has had some really close competition between the top three teams; G2 Esports, Fnatic & Origen. While unconfirmed if all the top teams will be participating, it would likely be so, considering Riot is giving teams full bragging rights for Spring with the conclusion of this event. G2 may have had an advantage over teams in the EU Spring Playoffs, however, one month could certainly affect the power dynamics between the 3 major teams.

Mid Season Streamathon

The end of the League of Legends Mid-Season Streamathon will have a finale show of celebration set to take place on the Sunday between 18:00 – 20:00.

As part of the fundraising cause, viewers will be able to directly donate, with all proceeds going towards COVID-19 relief. While Riot has donated over $4.5 million globally so far, it simply is not enough, and frontline workers especially need all the support they can get.

Raising further funds for the event, it will be supported alongside Mastercard, Red Bull, and Secret lab, no new strangers to the esports sponsorship space.
